Who would buy an Evercade or Polymega?

The value proposition and target audience for these 2 new retro gaming options seem difficult to pin down. In 2020, a world where retro gaming has never been cheaper or easier, who wants to spend money on a cartridge based system or a modular disc-based emulation machine? The answer is me. Let me tell you why.

It’s so pretty…

Before I get into what these systems are, I feel like I need to explain my philosophy on retro gaming and why the mainstream options available now don’t satisfy me. Media has an interesting phenomena where only the best of an era survives and that cream of the crop media becomes the nostalgic standard. For example, “music today sucks!” Says the Old man or the Kid that’s too cool for today’s music. Then they listen to the Beatles and lament the loss of an era that produced such amazing music. The reality is, the only 60s and 70s music that has survived on compilation disc and XM radio are the best tracks. Sure, The Beatles are objectively great but there was awful music from that era too. That music doesn’t get played anymore. Look at late 80’s NES games, it’s been curated down after decades of people only remembering and revisiting the best that people think the only games from that era were Super Mario. Bros and Mega Man 2. The bad games have been left out of the conversation BUT MOST IMPORTANT TO ME is the mediocre games are left out of the conversation too.

This game was dope!

Let’s look back at the PS1 era of gaming and specifically the racing games of that time. If you were to ask anybody what the best racing game is for the PS1 era, the answer is Gran Turismo. Period. They could re-release Gran Turismo today and it would sell amazingly and it holds up really well. I loved Gran Turismo. I also loved Need for Speed High Stakes and Daytona USA CE for Saturn during that era. Test Drive was making great racing games in the PS1 era and so was Codemasters. Those are good games lost in the conversation of the era. Why talk about a mediocre game when you can just stare at the best? Why watch a documentary on Dominique Wilkins or Clyde Drexler when we can release another endless examining of Michael Jordan (yay)? That said, the middle of the road games are very interesting to me for both nostalgic and preservation reasons. NFL 2K5 is a legend but NFL Gameday ’98 brought 3D polygonal models to football. Gameday is a forgotten series. Content creators still talk about NFL 2K5 but Gameday is lost. Gran Turismo is still being dissected while Need for Speed and Test Drive are never discussed. This matters because if I want to learn about or enjoy Gameday, my only option is to play it on the original disc. Old Madden games show up on Plug and Play devices and still have life. Mega Man gets a new collection ever week but I want to play Need for Speed and Croc.

Great collection for all the major systems

What is the Polymega? The Polymega is a modular disc based console that emulates media. The base of the Polymega is a disc based console that can play the neo-geo cd, turbo duo, sega cd, saturn and more all with multiple region compatibility. The modular aspect of the system refers to the ability to buy and slot in cartridge based system components. You can buy the SNES, NES, Turbo-grafx, and 32x/Genesis components to add onto the system. The biggest feature of the system is the disc drive. I have a lot of those system, the Saturn, PS1, but the disc drives are failing and sound like death. The disc-based systems that I don’t own are super hard to find working. The Sega CD has been something I want to buy for year but finding a working one is almost impossible. The few working Sega CDs I find cost $130 at least. Finding a Turbo Graphics CD or a Turbo Duo cost hundreds of dollars, and Neo Geo CD cost even more. The value proposition of a New disc drive to play these old games is very high. The Polymega also allows you the ability to burn your discs ISO to the system so they don’t need be read during play. It’s a great way to save your discs, especially the rare games.

I guess all this talk about value proposition doesn’t make sense without acknowledging that the Polymega cost $400. The add-ons cost $80 each. It’s a big ask when an Xbox One X can be purchased for less at this point. Systems like this are always such a tough thing to buy but also to pass up. This system will sell out at this price, no doubt. Much like the Analogue high-end FGPA products, the market for these consoles gets sold out fast. The issue is if you don’t buy the first run there may never be a 2nd run and the aftermarket prices are INSANE. It creates a weird sense of urgency for something that is inherently non-urgent…the games for this system already exist. It’s something I always tell my Transformers Collecting friends, buy it new because it will never be cheaper especially for short packed figures and limited items.

What is the Evercade? The Evercade is a brand new handheld system that plays retro game collections. What separates it from other retro handhelds on the market are it’s build quality and that it uses cartridges. The is banking on collectors love of physical media as the selling point. Each cartridge has 10-20 games on it. There is a Taito cartridge and a Namco one and an Atari cartridge. The idea is that the games are emulated perfectly, they come in a beautiful case with a manual. You can display and trade your cartridges and relive the glory days of previous console generations. The value proposition for the Evercade is seemingly dubious on 2 fronts- 1. Chinese manufactured emulator machines have tons of preloaded games and emulators on them for the same price or cheaper and 2. A lot of the games on the Evercade are available on many different systems at cheaper prices. My thoughts on this are that the build quality on a lot of those Chinese consoles are awful and they lack customer support. As much as I support emulation and that scene, there is something to be said for being to have access to great retro games and to be able to support the creators in the process. To the second point, as somebody who has Double Dragon on a Master System, PC, Xbox One, and Phone….why would I want it on Evercade? The answer is solid portable emulation with good tactile controls. Ports on new consoles are iffy and I can’t take them anywhere. Games on my phone suck because touch screens don’t emulate tactile controls well enough for retro games.

The biggest perk of the Evercade for me is that all of my current ports of retro games are tied to internet access. Steam, Xbox Live, and the Eshop all need the internet. The retro games I play on the Switch are tied to having an online subscription. The Evercade doesn’t need the internet. Those cartridges are complete, no patches and updates. That’s very appealing to me. The Evercade cost around $80 for the console and it comes with a game, the games cost $20 per cartridge. It’s a good value and won’t cause sticker shock quite like the Polymega.

The one thing retro systems and games can’t defeat is time. These new console options are adding life to old hardware. The Polymega can be purchased at Walmart.com and the Evercade is available on Amazon.com. It’s incredible that in 2020 these consoles have mainstream distribution. It’s probably pretty obvious I am going to be getting both systems, but I recommend that you take a look. If you read this, I know you be interested in either one of these. Stay Safe, thanks for reading. Peace!

The Cars of Neo Geo- 3 Count Bout

One of my favorite details in playing Neo Geo games are the different cars that are included in the games. I love cars and one of my favorite things in gaming is seeing where real cars are shown in the world. I want to point out the cars, give what I think are the correct makes and models and any information that might be interesting.

First up is Neo Geo Wrestling title 3 Count Bout! It’s an arcade fighter where you fight a ladder of characters in different rings and environments leading to a championship fight. 3 Count Bout is a fun wrestling game in it’s own right and they start you out in a classic squared circle for your fight. After the win, you are quickly taken to a warehouse for your next bout and that’s where you can see the cars!

3 Count Bout is from the early ’90s, 1993 to be exact. So the car models I think I am seeing are a 1993 Nissan Fairlady Z32, 1993 Chevy 320 Conversion Van, 1993 Cadillac Deville, and maybe a 1993 Chevy S10 pickup.

What’s wild about this level is that you can jump on the cars, throw people into the cars and they take damage!

I don’t think these car companies would agree to this in 2019

The 1993 Nissan Fairlady Z is a very popular car. JDM cars are legendary now, at least for my generation, due to Gran Turismo and lots of games that introduced us to cars that weren’t super prevalent on the roads. At least not in Ohio. Combine that with the emergence of drift culture in America and Fast & Furious and you have a group of cars that instill a lot of positive feelings in myself and other gamers in their 30’s. The Fairlady was the 300ZX in the US. It had a 3.0L V6 that made 222 HP. There was NA version as well as the turbo variant. The early years of this car cost around $30,000 but the last model year cost around $50,000. I can’t get into how the car drives, I have only enjoyed it in video games but the look is so iconic.

Beautiful.

The 1993 Chevy Conversion Van IS something I saw in Ohio…a lot. I think everybody saw them everywhere. I was honestly surprised to see it in a Neo Geo game. Chevy vans have been a part of the driving landscape since 1964. The version shown in 3 Count Bout is based on the 3rd generation platform from 1971. I am going to assume this version has the Detroit Diesel V8 Engine because…Detroit Diesel V8 sounds dope. This van is most famous from The A-Team! They used a modified Chevy van. I have driven one of these and it didn’t have power steering nor did it accelerate. It was a nightmare to drive in the most fun way possible. I was delivering pool tables and slate and that van felt indestructible once it was up to speed. Almost impossible to park because the amount of strength it took to turn the wheel was herculean.

THE A-TEAM!

1993 Cadillac Deville, the classiest car in fighting games. Jalopnik, my favorite car site, has pointed this out before but Japan doesn’t buy a lot of Cadillacs. 1993 was the 6th generation of Devilles. The pen-ultimate of the Deville name. This beauty had a 4.9L 200hp V8 engine. This car wasn’t fast per se but was smooth with the “computer command ride” speed sensitive suspension. Deville’s have always been known for class, being used in “Goodfellas” and lot’s of gangster movies. Those 70’s Cadillacs are a little more revered than the early 90’s counterpart. Early 90’s Cadillacs had a strong presence in West Coast rap culture and would stay strong in the Southern hip-hop scene.

Class.

1993 Chevy S10 is the final car. The ’93 S10 is the second generation on the platform. It’s a small pick up truck, something that is a legendary creature at this point. Truck have ballooned for years, but the S10 was a true small pick up made in a time where people wanted that. The S10 didn’t have a presence in Japan until 1996 as the Isuzu Hombre. Emission laws in the 90’s in Japan made owning a pickup truck almost impossible. It makes me wonder if 3 Count Bout was set in America, or at least the warehouse level may be. The most famous truck from Japan is the Toyota Hilux, known for basically being indestructible. The S10 is on the A-fram platform and is not quite indestructible or at least not known for it. This was a rear-wheel drive truck with a 4.3L V6. The S10 was a truck I saw a lot of in Ohio. The “Xtreme” trim was pretty awesome and many of my neighbors had one.

Great Truck.

There are so many great cars in Neo Geo games from that era. The most interesting question that is hard to answer is “why” or more specifically, why these cars? Did the developers or art team have an affinity for them? Or is this a reference to something in wrestling lore. The cars do have the effect of grounding the game in reality in a really cool way. I know what universe this game is taking place in because the parking garage they are fighting in looks like a real one. This wrestling match is happening on Earth, in a place where you can buy a Chevy S10. That is awesome. It’s also really cool to see these vehicles represented in gaming (and not just a racing game). Neo Geo seems to hide cool cars all over there games and I love trying to figure what the car is and if it has any significance to Japan or the era. Thanks for reading, peace!

Halloween 2018 Special! Neo-Geo Mini Reviewtober! 31 reviews in 31 sentences! SCARY! OCTOBER! SPOOKY!

I recently ordered the Neo Geo Mini (International) off of Amazon. As an arcade fan and a Neo Geo fan, this system checks all of the boxes for me. I was really disappointed that I never got a Neo Geo X Gold. It was out of my price range when it came, and it’s sure as hell out of my range now. The Mini and the 2 controllers were a touch overpriced but worth it. The arcade machine and the controllers don’t have the clicky sticks but they still feel really good and the screen is awesome!Image result for neo geo halloween

There are 40 games on the machine and a lot of them are Metal Slug 1-X and King of Fighters. Everything runs well, and it’s so easy to boot up and play. I am super excited to easily play 3 Count Bout, Crossed Swords, Football Frenzy and some of the more obscure games I never had the chance to play. With Neo Geo games costing $7.99 a pop on the Nintendo estore and Microsoft store, this is a good value. TO THE SPOOKY REVIEWS!Image result for neo geo halloween

Sonic Forces Review (PC)- Oh a new Mario came out?

This is the best year of Sonic games I’ve had since colors came out for both wii and 3ds. Sonic Mania is a special game but I have little interest in always revisiting vintage Sonic. Sonic Forces is the new 3D Sonic game. As always, it is getting lambasted in reviews and polarizing the fan base.

This game is the Sonic Colors sequel I have been waiting for for years. I love Sonic. I love 3D Sonic. This game is everything I like about Colors with a character creation gimmick that works very well. It’s fascinating in a year where Mario is playing dress up, Sega figured out how to get me to change outfits on my created character between every level for fun.

STORY- Real talk, story was dark. Robotnik won. Sonic got captured. A rookie came in to help the resistance force. Robotnik has a new bad guy called infinite manipulating time and space with the wild sound effect from Sonic Mania when you teleport between zones. The resistance fights slowly taking over the world. There are a lot of cut scenes but they work. I really liked the themes of the story. Be brave, and trust your friends. It’s corny but it’s so engrained in this tale, it’s hard not to be inspired. The story works well enough, and ends how you would expect (nobody dead…).

MUSIC- This soundtrack is a call back to Sonic Adventure in the best way! It’s so good.

CONTROLS- The physics are Ok. Momentum on jumps for your avatar take some getting used to. It all works. I never felt like I died due to the controls. Classic sonic does not feel as good as Mania sonic and that’s a shame. Boost sonic, current 3d sonic still boosts and moves fast. I felt like they refined the controls where you press the bumpers to have Sonic shift left or right and it felt good. Not a ton of endless drops to punish you either. Classic Sonic feels slow. Avatar has an awesome move set with the grappling hook and they have an amazing animation where you use the hook to turn when your running fast. New Sonic feels great but he is used in 2D segments too many times for my liking. I think they learned a lot from previous games on the controls. The level design never leaves you wondering why the he’ll they had a 90degree turn when Sonic can’t make those turns boosting. The levels compliment the controls.

LEVEL DESIGN- There are lots of amazing set pieces and gorgeous backgrounds. This game does my favorite gimmick of having you run and the floor builds under you as you move. The level design has taken a lot of criticism mainly due to the length of the stages. Most stages can be cleared in a couple minutes and there are fewer alternate paths to explore. I took the time to play Sonic 1 and 2 on my phone as well as revisiting Sonic Generations on PC and Lost World on PC to compare. The best sonic levels are short. I remembered why I never play Sonic 1 anymore and it’s because of Marble Zone Act 3. It’s too fucking long and it’s needlessly hard and railroads you into a crappy boss fight. Levels like this show the faults in Sonic games immediately. Every level in Sonic Lost Worlds is too long. Play Mario Galaxy and relish in the bite sized levels for a minute then go slog through a marathon 5 minute Sonic Lost World level. Sonic Levels are a balance much like a carnival ride, a roller coaster that lasts too long is just torture and long Sonic levels in my experience leave me feeling tortured just waiting for the end. Sonic Mania hits the perfect balance and Forces leans a little too much on the short side but I think it’s for the better.

GRAPHICS- Hedgehog engine looks so good.

GAMEPLAY- The game essentially breaks down into 4 types of levels, classic sonic, avatar, 3d sonic, buddy levels (think sonic heroes). Each level is a 2-3 minute chunk, made to be repeated. There are around 30 levels in the base game, with many secret levels, shadow DLC, and daily missions and challenges. There seems to be a sense that levels are too short but honestly my biggest complaint with Mania and other games are most Sonic levels overstay their welcome. I have never liked a Sonic stage that was lunching near the 10minute limit. 3minutes gives you a chance to see the level, hit a challenge and move on. My complaint was sometimes for story purposes they tell you enter an area and a 60 second level is you running into the front door. That’s lame but rare. If you like modern Sonic, you will like this game. If you’re coming in still high off of Sonic Mania be warned that the classic Sonic stages don’t feel as good as the Sonic Generations classic stages and nowhere near as solid as Mania.

WHERE DOES THIS RANK IN SONIC HISTORY? Better than Unleashed and 06, almost better than Colors…..The best Sonic is still Sonic the Hedgehog 2 followed closely by Sonic’s Neo Geo Pocket Color outing.

FINAL THOUGHTS – This is a solid game. The boss fights are fun and the final boss doesn’t shit the bed like in Generations. This game feels like a clear, consistent vision.

It’s amazing in 2017 a tentpole Mario and Sonic come out. Sonic Mania will probably be getting GOTY nods, Forces isn’t that refined but it’s a solid game.

Random Thoughts on 5/13/15: Is this Offensive or Empowering? SNK Gals’ Fighter (NEO GEO POCKET)

Sigh…. Some times a game comes along that makes you question everything. That’s a bold statement, but SNK Gals’ Fighter has my head spinning.

Let me frame this issue; Gaming has a lack of female protagonist. Theoretically, a game that focuses on female characters would be ideal. In reality, the game that features all female characters (and one transgender character?) is probably offensive and problematic.

This game falls into the same weird land of Rumble Roses, Arcana Heart, or Dead or Alive Beach Volleyball. These games all have female casts, but is this empowering? or are these women just being used as sexual objects who happen to be in these games for the “male gaze” or other problematic reasons?

SNK Gals Fighters-

“The Good”– All female cast with one trans character (Miss X). Each character is fully fleshed out with a great move set and awesome animations. The characters are drawn in a chibi-super def style that is not super sexy. When you end a fight with a super move the background shows scenes from the characters life that is being beaten. Think about that….the losing character has their life flash before their eyes during the beating. Amazing.

Not super sexy…..

“The Problematic (see: Bad)”– All female cast but the character’s motives are very stereotypical and archaic. The game has a fighting tournament where the winner gets a wish. One character wishes to marry the man of her dreams, another wishes to have a tooth pulled, while another character wishes ill will on a crushes ex-girlfriend…..powerful stuff. The game is lighthearted but it’s a lame story. Also, you get items in the game to help during battle. These items range from explosives to hairpins and bracelets. hairpins. hairpins. Fucking hairpins.

They also litter the game with hearts, pink, and a more bubbly font….because that’s femininity is….

“The Wild Card”- Miss X. Miss X is a poorly disguised male (Iori from Kinf of Fighters) who is the boss character in the tournament who is trying to win the wish for himself. All of the women know Miss X is a man, question her, and then just accept that Iori is identifying as a female. It’s kind of ahead of it’s time. On one hand it makes like of people who identify as trans and their experience on the other hand Miss X is a strong character who identifies unabashedly as female. (King of Fighter characters are known for being androgynous anyways, so just something to keep in mind)

All that said, the game itself is really fun and a well made fighting game. The difference between this game and Rumble Roses is that this game is taken seriously by the developer from a game standpoint and was not made to pander and be a throw away title.

Just my thoughts. Peace!
